This film is part of a wider series I produced and directed for the University of Birmingham, each one focusing on a different SME and the challenges they were tackling in partnership with the university.
My role covered the complete process: producing, directing, shooting interviews, lighting, capturing B-roll, shaping the narrative, and overseeing the edit. Working with SMEs means immersing yourself in their world first. I spent time understanding the science, the problem they were addressing, and the impact of their work so the film could speak clearly to both expert and general audiences.
A big part of these projects is people. Choosing locations that feel natural, putting contributors at ease on camera, and asking the right questions to uncover genuine insight all help build a story that feels human rather than corporate.
This film on tracking emerging viruses is a strong example of that approach. It combines clarity, craft, and an accessible narrative while staying true to the complexity of the subject. It’s the same process I used across industries — from universities to agriculture, finance, and automotive - to create thoughtful, tailored content for organisations of every size.
